Masterclass Freeform Sinamay Techniques with TRACY CHAPLIN

Tracy Chaplin has developed a series of Freeform Sinamay Techniques to enable students to create unique and individual hats without the need for brim blocks. Tracy has over 20 years experience working as a milliner, she is an enthusiastic, patient and inspiring teacher. Several of Tracy’s students have won prizes using the techniques that she has taught them.
Course Outline
On this 3 day workshop the following techniques will be covered in detail.
• Preparing materials for blocking: stiffening straw, cutting on the bias, making templates for your design.
• Design and inspiration: The importance of a fluid design and how to achieve this.
• Manipulating and blocking techniques: How to shape, twist, curl and manipulate sinamay. Shaping materials by hand using free form blocking techniques.
• Custom crowns and double brims: how to custom make a crown to suit your design, creating small and large double brims for statement hats in different shapes and sizes.
• Wiring techniques: attaching the wire to the crown and brim and then adding your trim or embellishment. Rolling techniques, wiring trims, attaching trims with wire. Stand alone techniques.
• Attaching the brim to the crown.
• Sewing techniques, applique trims and the importance of finishing and attention to detail will also be covered.
Students will be guided through the process and given clear instructions and helpful time saving tips. Students will learn how to create individual and unique hats. There will be a maximum of 10 students on the workshop.
By the end of the workshop you will have created a beautiful hat.
